One could argue Eminem, Ludacris, Wu-Tang Clan and other rap artists with their rise to acceptance in popular culture.  Others would argue the explosion of lesser-known independent poets, such as California’s own Rick Tragic.  With his unconventional, abrasive style, Rick Tragic has emerged as a fresh young voice on the poetic scene.  Has Rick murdered modern poetry or infused new life into it?  That’s for the audience to decide with the release of Rick’s second book THE DESCENT.

Billed as “…an epic poetic narrative of the tragic hero in the modern day”, Rick attempts to solve the disparity between the new hip verse and the old stale poetry still taught in schools.  While studying theatre in college Rick Tragic became fascinated with the concept of the fallen hero.  This is the idea of the classic protagonist who goes from a position of power and wealth to one of loss and despair.  Rick explains, “I wanted to take this ancient notion of storytelling and present it to a new audience for the 21^st century.”  What would churn in the mind of a present day tragic hero?  How would they face the challenges of our time?  And finally what role would pop-culture play in
shaping these events?  Rick Tragic hopes to answer these questions in his second installment of Contemporary Visions II ~ THE DESCENT.

“I’m not content with merely writing poetry as much as I am in presenting to the world a great work of art”, states Rick.  Contemporary Visions II  THE DESCENT takes the reader on an incredible journey beginning with its odd dedication “…to no one”.  From there, each poem skillfully advances the narrative until its climax in the final chapter, “The Last Catastrophes”.  Poems such as, “Asinine Machine” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” reflect injustices in our society.  While others such as, “Poetic Manifesto” and “King of Abrasion” comment on the state of modern poetry.  And works like “Mating Fate” and “Vomitorium” show the author poking fun at himself.

In addition to poetry, THE DESCENT contains other points of interest, which include: an exciting intro by the author, a photographic montage essay, an easy reference index guide and author bio.  The attractively bound book gives off a mysterious serial-killer vibe with its dark colors and flame motif.  In closing Rick comments, “My dream is that my collection of words will leave my readers fulfilled, that they’ve experienced something great, something dangerous and ultimately rewarding.  Jean-Paul Sartre once wrote, ‘genius is what a man invents when he is looking for a way out’.  Well, THE DESCENT has become my way out…my genius.”
